Tugwell Creek Meadery wins Gold at the NorthWest Wine Summit 2007

by Dana LeComte

At the NorthWest Wine Summit 2007 Tugwell Creek Meadery was presented with a gold medal for its Brazen Blackberry Melomel 2005. One of the most respected wine competitions in the North America, this competition focuses exclusively on wines produced in the NorthWest, specifically, wines from Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
"This is a not too intimidating and something people can easily slip into if they have not experienced mead before", says Dana LeComte who owns Tugwell Creek Honey Farm and Meadery with husband Robert Liptrot, 40 year beekeeping veteran and 25 year mead making veteran. An Anglo Saxon term, Melomel literally translates to fruit honey wine. This style of Mead was the mainstay of ancient agricultural communities, their festivals, and traditions long before the cultivation of grapes and barley. Tugwell Creek Meadery has been producing Melomel since its inception in 2003 but this is a first appearence for the Brazen Blackberry. Off dry and robust in character, it pairs nicely with pork, duck, lamb or is nice with cheeses. A local artisan meadery, Tugwell Creek uses ingredients that are either produced on the farm or are sourced from other Southern Vancouver Island producers.

"It is very nice to see meads winning awards along with grape wines. It shows that mead is becoming a contender on a larger stage. We hope this continues as our burgeoning industry grows." quotes Dana LeComte. Tugwell Creek Honey Farm and Meadery was licensed as British Columbia's first Meadery in 2003. Its distinctive Meads (honey wines) reflect harmony and balance by blending varietal honeys and berries from the local region. Mead (Honey Wine) is the oldest art of fermentation. Consumed by all, from kings to peasants, mead has gained a reputation as a giver of life, wisdom, courage and strength down through the ages. Served at Sooke Harbour House and other top island restaurants, Tugwell's Meads are sold from their tasting room (Wednesday -Sunday 12-5pm) and through select wine stores on Vancouver Island and Vancouver.
